Implant Basics

Lasting Solution

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root—a small screw made of titanium or a titanium alloy—surgically placed in the jawbone. It provides one of the most stable and reliable solutions for replacing missing teeth, creating a strong foundation for natural-looking restorations.

Dental Implant Placement Steps

Dental Implant Journey – Step by Step

Six clear steps take you from diagnosis through healing to the secure, natural-looking implant restoration.

Step 1

Consultation

The first step of implantation is a thorough examination and an accurate diagnosis. The dentist takes a panoramic X-ray or 3D CBCT scan to assess the quality of the bone and determine the implant’s exact position. Based on the results, a personalised treatment plan is prepared detailing every stage of the implant procedure.

Step 2

Preparation and anaesthesia

Before the operation, the oral cavity is thoroughly cleaned and local anaesthesia is applied so the patient experiences no pain during the surgery. In some cases, antibiotics may also be prescribed to prevent infection, especially if the patient’s immune system is weaker.

Step 3

Implant placement

The dentist makes a small incision in the gum, prepares the site in the bone and inserts the implant, which acts as an artificial tooth root. After the procedure the gum is closed with sutures to promote faster healing.

Step 4

Healing phase (osseointegration)

Next comes the osseointegration period, during which the bone gradually fuses with the implant. This process can take 3–6 months, and for stable fixation it is essential that the implant is not loaded during this time.

Step 5

Abutment attachment

When osseointegration is complete, the dentist uncovers the implant and attaches an abutment. This component serves as the base to which the final restoration—such as a crown or bridge—will later be fixed.

Step 6

Final restoration placement

The final step is creating and securing the custom-made crown or other prosthesis to the abutment, ensuring the tooth looks and functions naturally. The dentist makes fine bite adjustments and provides full instructions for implant care.

Common questions about dental implants

Helpful tips

We’ve collected the most common questions about dental implants to give you a clear picture of the procedure and your options. Our goal is to help you visit our clinic with full information—calm and confident.

There are countless possible solutions, depending on the type of dental restoration you want.
If you choose a removable restoration but want implants to improve stability, even two implants can be enough.
If you want a fixed (non-removable) restoration, you’ll need at least four implants.

Preparing the surgical environment takes about 30–60 minutes, including anaesthesia, setting up a sterile field and patient briefing. The actual insertion of one implant usually takes 5–10 minutes, though complex cases or multiple implants may require more time.

It is performed under local anaesthesia, so the surgery itself is pain-free. Mild pain or swelling afterwards is common but usually well controlled with painkillers.

After placement, the jawbone needs 3–6 months to fuse completely with the implant (osseointegration), which is essential for a stable, successful restoration.

With proper care and regular dental check-ups, an implant can last for decades. Success rates are very high, especially with good oral hygiene.

Generally adults over 18 with healthy bone structure. Smoking, diabetes or certain medical conditions can affect the success rate.

Temporary swelling, bruising or mild pain may appear. Serious complications are rare but can include infection, implant rejection or bone loss.

Clean them just like natural teeth: brush regularly, floss and use mouth rinse to keep both implants and gums healthy.

The price depends on factors such as the material used, the number of implants and the dentist’s experience. Although implants cost more than traditional prosthetics, their durability makes them a long-term investment.

There is no upper age limit, but the jawbone must have sufficient thickness and be in good health.
